I was reading my favorite photography forum today (Fred Miranda dot com) and came across a thread that caught me attention like it hasn’t been caught in years. When looking through the photography forums we see thousands upon thousands of photos, many of which are stunning in quality and composition. After a while you can become immune to spectacular work. The Pros that post on the Fred Miranda boards are incredibly talented. They have spoiled me. Now it really takes something that borders on a religious experience to grab my attention. I have become jaded to incredible work in photography.
Then I came across a thread entitled “My Story…and Natural Light Portraits” by the gifted Tim Park. I clicked the link to take a look. I read what he had to say and it was interesting. He takes portraits of preschoolers. He explains a bit about his methodology. To quote him directly he wrote the following:
For lighting, I relied only on window light and a reflector. I set up my gray muslin about six feet behind the students to throw it out of focus, set my camera on a tripod, and proceeded to make a fool of myself. For some kids, it took a lot to bring out a smile, but in the end, it was well worth it.
The man used window light and a reflector……that’s it!!!!! A minimalist approach in the hands of Tim Park turned out to be pure, 100% genius.
So I finished reading his explanation of how the photos came to be and how he captured them. Then I looked at the photos he took that featured several preschoolers. The term astonishing does not do his work justice. These images are so simple yet so profoundly great that it pretty much blew me out of my chair. After seeing endless streams of photo after photo, portrait after portrait in photo forums and galleries all over the web, Tim Park’s pictures unexpectedly crept up on me and slammed me over the head. Brilliant lighting and such a simple set up. The photos to my eyes are stunning in their quality and execution. I could rave on and on about them. Masterful work pretty much sums it up.
I’ll bet you would like to see the photos wouldn’t you? Well………..here you go. Click right here and you can take a look.
My money is on you thinking to yourself, WoW!
