As I was reading a post in one of the forums over at Fred Miranda’s web site, I came across a photographer who posed the question, “How is this look achieved?” He posted a link to the portfolio of Vanie Poyey. I was curious and clicked the link wondering what “look” this forum member wanted to “achieve”. I spent the next couple of hours examining every photograph Vanie Poyey had on her web site and reading every word on her blog.
I have been looking at photographs posted in professional photography forums for years and I would conservatively estimate that I have seen at least several hundred thousand images. Probably more. It takes something extraordinary to grab my attention now. Something magnificent. Something incredible. Something remarkable. Something special. Vanie Poyey’s work was all that and more. Her web site was like finding the holy grail of headshot photography.
Vanie Poyey is the finest headshot photographer in America. Her work displays a stunning artistic visionary brilliance. The perfect headshot in photography is an important genre in my estimation. We remember iconic portraits forever if done well. It’s not surprising that she has been published in USA Today, The New York Times and The Washington Post (among many others). It’s not surprising that celebrities such as Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, and Nellie as well as sports legend’s Cal Ripken Jr, David Ortiz, Derek Jeter, and Dale Earnheardt Jr. have been photographed by Vanie Poyey.
In my view the more important issue other than the stature and gravitas of being published by these world class entities is the fact of the artistry of her work itself. It stands alone as exquisite fine art, pure and simple. The structure and composition of her headshot work is reason for high praise on it’s own. Add to that stunning, crisp, clean, iconic and diamond perfect presentation where contrast, color, depth of field, clarity, and a simple magnetic appeal that is brimming with personality and an aliveness that is riveting to view. Classic, superb quality photography. Each image a masterpiece all it’s own.
To be the best in your field is something many never achieve. I consider Babe Ruth the best baseball player of all time. I consider Neil Armstrong the top astronaut that ever lived. Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, Lance Armstrong, Bill Gates. These folks are all considered the best at what they do.
Vanie Poyey is the best headshot photographer in America.
